Doctor İsmail Kamil Tarhan Primary School was opened to service by the Ministry of Education with one floor and five classrooms on a 4608 square meters place on the 26th of May1979.
Doctor İsmail Kamil Tarhan whose name was given to the school was born in the province Osmaniye. He finished the Medical and Veterinarian Faculty in İstanbul. Dr. İ. Kamil Tarhan has been to the province Çanakkale and to Iran during the First World War. After working as a doctor in Mersin during the years 1942-1975 he died in 1980. His name was given to the school since he had donated the school building land.
The population in our district was affected because of the rising migration from neighbour cities and south-east part of Turkey. Therefore, 2nd floor of the school building was built in 1986. Another 8 classrooms were ready for education now.
Since the school year of 1990-1991 our school started to serve 6th, 7th and 8th grades students. So, a building with 3 floors was built next to the previous one and that extra building was including 12 classrooms.
In the school year of 2000-2001 students whom have special needs started to be taught in a special class for them.
With the help of parent-teacher’s association and families a science lab and an ICT classroom were opened to service in 1992-1994. They were also modernized with materials given by the Ministry of Education in 2007. Besides, a playpen was built for preschool education students the same year.
An extra school building was built during the years 2009-2010 that included 8 classrooms, 2 kindergarten classrooms, a science lab, an ICT classroom, a multi-purpose lounge, an administrative room, a teachers’ room and modern toilets.
For many years, an average of 1500 students were educated at Dr. İ. Kamil Tarhan Primary School. This number is an average of 1250 now, since new schools were built around our school during the last few years.
Our school is a formal primary school. The school has a student population of about 1218- 658 boys and 560 girls(updated on 16th of September 2011). Our students are aged 6 to 14. We have a staff of 61; 4 pre-primary education teachers, 4 Turkish teachers, 3 math teachers, 3 science teachers, 4 English teachers, 3 social studies teachers, 2 religion teachers, 1 ICT teacher, 2 P.E. teachers, 1 music teacher, 1 visual arts teachers, 3 technology and design teachers, 20 elementary education teachers, 2 teachers of special needs education, 3 psychological counseling and guidance teachers, a headmaster, 2 submanagers and 2 officers.
We are eager to do the best for our students. Through our Comenius project 1-2-3 Health! We hope to develop ourselves as staff and students about European education systems. We also want to bring Europe and the European community closer to us and our students and to introduce the European dimension in education.
